Cartie Challenge Fills Up in Record Time

The 25th entry for the 2008 Catterline Cartie Challenge arrived his afternoon, which means that the official limit has now been reached and any further entries will go on the reserve list in case any places become available between now and the 14th June. There has been far more interest in the Cartie Challenge than in previous years and the places have been snapped up much quicker - this time last year we had just 10 confirmed teams, but we now have a record number of entries in just 2 months.

If you were hoping to take part but did not submit your entry in time, please send one in anyway but without the fee. We'll put you on the reserve list and will be in touch if any places become available, and we will also get in touch with you next year to give you an advanced reminder.

The 2008 Cartie Challenge promises to be a great weekend. The strong local feel of the event remains as nearly all of last year's teams will be taking part again, but there are also several teams that will be running at Catterline for the very first time - some travelling hundreds of miles to take part.

There are some notable absences from the field, but perhaps the biggest shock is that two time champion cartie "Elijah" will not be taking part in 2008. The "Chariots of Fire" team have decided to retire the controversial "pseudo three wheeler" and concentrate their efforts on "The Dominator". However, with their ultra competitive Technical Director Byron McKibben unavailable on the day due to poorly thought out holiday booking, they would seem to have a lot of ground to make up. Other notable gaps in the field are Mike Milne and his "Smell of Fear", and the ingenious Jim Ewen (builder of the Bandit and the Deathwish).

The Stylish Rogues are making a welcome return and if they can match the success of their previous contraptions - The Red Barron and Thunderbird 2 - they will be strong favourites for the Best Decorated as well as being very popular with the spectators.

At the faster end of the spectrum there promises to be several new carties from existing teams. The Cheats, Team Barras, Team Riley, Tangerine Sons of Thunder and several others are all planning new machines to try and improve on their previous efforts. These will be running against some established competitors such as the Bandit and 2006 champion Once a Fortnight.

Many of the teams that are new to Catterline have competed in other events elsewhere in the UK. The Dunnydeer Flyer was the winner at Monymusk in 2007 and is coming to Catterline with high hopes and will be aiming to match Once a Fortnight's feat of winning at both events. "Belchford Ahead" are travelling all the way from Lincolnshire to take part and are looking forward to joining us - they have their own cartie race down there in September, but obviously want to come to Scotland to see what a proper hill looks like Wink.
